Lighting systems - tested in practice

The range of lamps and lighting systems in the livestock sector is extensive. However, not all products are suitable for practical use, where animal-friendly husbandry conditions and the service life of the lighting installations are important.

In the practical tests for the DLG-ANERKANNT (DLG-APPROVED) seal of quality for lighting systems, the focus is therefore on the aspects of animal welfare, durability and resistance to cleaning.

Test criteriaObjectives

Flicker-free lighting systems

  • Does the light modulation frequency meet the requirements of the respective animal?
  • Measure the amplitude, waveform, frequency and modulation depth of the flickering (also at different dimming levels of different lamps of a product family).

Animal-friendliness
Even imperceptibly unstable light puts a strain on the eye muscles and nervous system of animals and disturbs the processing of sensory stimuli in the brain. Such stressors can trigger behavioural disorders.

Ammonia resistance
Simulated practical use of approx. 10 years under stable conditions. The test samples are exposed to controlled conditions for 1,500 hours in a climate chamber:

  • Temperatures up to 70 °C Relative humidity up to 70 %.
  • Ammonia concentration up to 750 ppm.
  • The test samples are switched on and off in a sensible rhythm.

Durability
The lighting systems must withstand the special conditions of stable air containing ammonia.

Cleaning resistance
No damage or water ingress when sprayed with high-pressure cleaners:

  • Spraying of critical functional areas
  • Gradual reduction of the distance between the water nozzle and the surface of the test sample with constant exposure time.
  • Material compatibility test with cleaning agents and disinfectants

Wear resistance
The lighting systems must withstand the stress of regular use of high-pressure cleaners with sometimes aggressive cleaning agents and disinfectants.

DLG-APPROVED: Modular examination structure

Depending on the scope of the test, the DLG-ANERKANNT (DLG-APPROVED) quality mark is awarded in value-determining individual criteria or for an overall test. The quality mark is valid for five years from the date of awarding. With the DLG-ANERKANNT quality mark and the associated DLG test report, you receive a meaningful expert judgement and a powerful tool for your marketing mix. 80 % of the farmers consider quality marks to be relevant decision-making aids for investments. Associated with this is a comprehensive range of cross-media services for your success with sales partners and customers.

Legal and normative requirements

The Animal Welfare Livestock Ordinance requires that sufficient lighting for observation and control of the animals must be possible at all times. The daily lighting intensity and duration must correspond to the needs of the species. As the stable also serves as a workplace for people, the Technical Rules for Workplaces ASR 3.4 from the Workplace Ordinance also apply.
