Type testing of lighting equipment for bicycles

Tested quality for more safety

According to the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) § 67 (1), bicycles may only be used in public road traffic if they are equipped with the prescribed and type-approved lighting devices. As a technical service designated by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt) for the type testing of vehicles and vehicle parts, we offer comprehensive service and support to manufacturers of lighting equipment for bicycles.

We support you:

  • For questions regarding the initial manufacturer assessment by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt)
  • When obtaining the necessary GENERAL TYPE APPROVAL (ABG) in accordance with Sec. 22a of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) in conjunction with the Ordinance on the Testing and Approval of the Construction Type of Vehicle Parts and their Marking (FzTV).
  • Homologation ranges from simple headlamps to complex headlamps with a daytime running light function and high beam function, or from normal tail lights for dynamo operation with or without a parking light function to taillamps specially developed for an e-bike with an integrated reflector and brake light function. It does not matter whether the lights are powered by a dynamo, batteries, rechargeable batteries or the on-board power supply of an e-bike.
Legally required tests for obtaining the general type approval (ABG)

According to Sec.  22a of the StVZO (German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations), lighting equipment on bicycles (StVZO Sec. 67) and bicycle trailers (StVZO Sec. 67a) must be type-approved in Germany.

  • TA 18 Reflectors
    • Testing the reflectivity values
    • Testing for leaks (water bath)
  • TA 18a Reflective strips on bicycle tyres
    • Testing the reflectivity values
  • TA 23 Headlamps for bicycles
    • Testing the illuminance distribution
    • Freedom from glare
  • In each case in conjunction with TA 2 General requirements, TA 3 Terms and measurement rules, TA 4 Structural requirements, TA 5 Structural tests
    • Leak test (IP test)
    • Corrosion resistance test
    • Fuel resistance test
  •     Temperature resistance test
    • Testing the fastening/adjusting device
    • Testing the electrical connections
    • Testing the battery/rechargeable battery supply
    • Dynamo supply test
    • Testing the capacitor LED stationary lighting
  • Checking the necessary documents/documentation
  • Type-approved parts must be provided with the corresponding quality mark in accordance with the German Vehicle Parts Regulation (FzTV)

In addition, we can support you with the following tests:
