German Wine Seal

For many decades, consumers have trusted the German Wine Seal as a guarantee of quality for German wines. Wines bearing this quality mark have been tested by experts from the DLG. The German Wine Seal comprises two award variants that provide information in a compact and comprehensible form about the quality as well as regional and taste distinctions of German wines.

Regionally typical, excellent quality from the German wine-growing regions

  • The German wine seal "Regionale Qualität" ("Regional Quality") focuses on the special regional features of the German wine-growing regions. The award-winning wines stand for regionally typical, traditional grape varieties and regionally specific cultivation methods.
  • The German wine seal "Geprüfte Qualität RÉSERVE" ("Certified quality RÉSERVE") distinguishes superior quality on the basis of defined quality requirements. They are characterised by an individual growing philosophy of the producer.

Three colours – Three worlds of taste

The classic quality mark German Wine Seal is not only proof of quality, but also an easy-to-understand colour system.

  • The red seal identifies sophisticated sweet wines. Their sweetness is pronounced and noble. They let you experience all the delights of the wine in its diversity. This colour variant is used when the wine has a residual sugar content of over 18 g/l.
  • The green seal identifies semi-dry wines with a stimulating balance between fine acidity and a little sweetness. This colour variant is used for wines with a maximum of 9 to 18 g/l of unfermented sugar, whereby the sugar may not be more than 10 g/l above the acidity.
  • The yellow seal identifies dry wines without perceptible sweetness, with a subtle hint and a distinctive classic style. This colour variant is used for wines with a maximum residual sugar content of 9 g/l, whereby the acid content may be no more than 2 g/l lower.

German wines of guaranteed quality

The German Wine Seal is the most traditional official quality mark for German wines. It has been awarded by the DLG since 1950 to wines of above-average quality. Wines bearing this quality mark are regularly tested by experts from the DLG TestService and stand for authentic German wine enjoyment.
