DLG chassis dynamometer

Performance and consumption measurement

DLG TestService offers one of the world’s most powerful all-wheel drive chassis dynamometers for measuring the performance and consumption of heavy-duty commercial vehicles at its Test Center in Groß-Umstadt. Focus here is on conducting measurements on tractors. The range of services is rounded off by consumption and performance measurements on other commercial vehicles and trucks. Measuring the entire electric power consumption efficiency chain of electric and hybrid vehicles is also possible.

The fuel and AdBlue consumption of tractors with up to around 1,000 hp can be tested on the chassis dynamometer. For the test, the tractors are stood on four steel rollers, each with a diameter of two metres, that can be driven and braked using electric motors. The rollers can be adjusted between 2.05 m and 6.00 m to set them to the necessary axle spacing. The maximum axle load is 30 t, i.e. a maximum total tractor weight of 60 t. The maximum tractive power that can be transferred per wheel is 135 kN.

The most important features at a glance

Output and tractive force measurements

  • Determination of tractive forces and tractive power, even at low vehicle speeds
  • Output measurements:
    • Tractive power of up to 700 kW at the rollers
    • PTO shaft or power take-off (PTO) power of up to 700 kW thanks to a separate loading unit
    • Hydraulic power of up to 150 kW thanks to a separate loading unit
  • Combined loading of the drive, the rear PTO shaft or the power take-off and the hydraulic system even under full load and at low speeds
  • Optional synchronous running of the dynamometers or wheels
  • Registration of slip, wheel speeds, variable drive outputs

Consumption and emission measurements

  • Fuel consumption measurements
  • AdBlue consumption measurements
  • Emission measurements using a PEMS (Portable Emission Measuring System)
  • Comparative output and consumption measurement with different fuels or lubricants at a constant room temperature
  • Determination of electric and hybrid vehicle ranges
  • Electric power consumption tests for electric or hybrid vehicles

Registration and recording of data

  • Temperature measurement: 8 channels as standard, more channels on request
  • Rotational speed registration: 4 channels as standard
  • CAN data recording: J1939, ISOBUS

Simulation of various operating states

  • Driving simulation, driving cycles, driving profiles according to customer specifications
  • Coast-down tests, load adjustment
  • Trailer operation load simulation
  • Tests for calibrating cooling performance
  • Engine and gearbox installation acceptance tests
  • Simulation of uphill driving, inclines and downgrades
  • Testing of the permanent brake system (according to the specifications of the German vehicle licensing regulations, UN/ECE regulations or EU regulations)
  • Simulation of load conditions, pull-down devices up to max. 10 t per axle

Fuel and AdBlue consumption measurement

We are able to measure the specific fuel and AdBlue consumption of tractors with up to 700 kW (1,000 hp) on the modern DLG chassis dynamometer.

DLG-PowerMix for tractors

Based on typical tractor working loads in practice, the DLG Test Commission has defined 14 load cycles in which the fuel and AdBlue consumption, the performance and ultimately the energy efficiency of the overall vehicle are determined on the DLG chassis dynamometer. The load cycles reflect typical field and transport work in both the partial and the full-load range
